How to identify the right and wrong side of crochet

The only real right and wrong side of crochet is the one that looks different. That said, in crochet, to simplify the way of thinking about it, the front of amigurumi and the side that faces you when you're crocheting is the wrong side, while the wrong side versus the right side facing out.

Right vs wrong side comparison

If you're going to turn your piece inside out through the piece, the right side faces out (as shown on the left in the image).

Telling the right side vs wrong side in crochet (step-by-step with photos)

When crocheting in a round, your piece will naturally curl in some way. The stitches on the side facing you will show the wrong side facing you. To ensure the right side faces you, follow these steps:

1 Step 1

1. Make sure the wrong side is facing you. The wrong side has the vertical lines.

2 Step 2

2. Push the inside of the piece until it flips inside out.

3 Step 3

3. The right side will now be facing you, and your piece will be upside down. To make it easier to keep crocheting.

4 Step 4

4. Rotate your piece so the open side is at the top of the piece, and the loop for the hook is on the right side of the piece toward you. The outside of your piece should now have a smooth V pattern.

Tip

Since it's something that's easy to forget to do, plus patterns don't call it out, we recommend flipping your piece as soon as possible to make the right side face out.

Still have questions?

For most amigurumi projects, yes! The right side (with the smooth V pattern) looks neater and more polished. However, some patterns intentionally use the wrong side for texture effects.
The sooner the better! We recommend flipping your piece after the first few rounds when it's still small and easy to turn inside out. The longer you wait, the harder it becomes.
Many patterns assume you know to flip your piece. If the pattern shows a smooth V texture on the outside of the finished project, you should flip your piece so the right side faces out.
Look at the texture: the right side has smooth, interlocking V shapes, while the wrong side shows more horizontal bars or ridges. If you've already stuffed your piece and it's wrong side out, you may need to remove the stuffing, flip it, and re-stuff.
